Maverick: adding knee levers

Post by Derek Austin »

Hello all! Been playing my shobud Maverick for about 9 months now and I’m ready for more levers.
I’m going to make and add 2-3 levers. I’m looking for advice on copedents and which lever to assign each change. Not really looking for advice to “just buy a new steel.”🙂
Currently I have a RKR that lowers the Es 4 and 8.
I’d like an F lever, and I like the idea of placing it in the RKR position that way my right knee exclusively controls the E strings. Is ther any down side to this set up?
What other levers and assignments would you recommend I add?

Thanks!

Adding knees to a Maverick can be done, but there's a reason why you rarely see one with more than just the one stock lever. It's not straightforward like on a modern all-pull steel. Do you have a solid understanding of how pull-release mechanisms work? Even with that understanding, the stock changer in a Maverick is not conducive to multiple changes on the same string. Having both a raise and a lower on the same string requires some mechanical cajoling, and some custom, or at least non-standard parts and methods. String 4 in particular would have both a half step and whole step raise, plus a lower, which is a challenge given the Maverick's inherent limitations. It's doable, but in the end it's still just a Maverick. That's why experienced folks will tend to offer that sort of advice you said you didn't want to hear. :(

Thanks for the reply! Yes I understand how the changer works. Actually I’ve already got it set up so that I can lower 4 and 8 with the lever AND still use the C pedal to raise 4 and 5. Mostly I’m try to figure out what others do for the lever assignments and why that makes sense from an ease of playing stand point.
