A6TH on a six-string PSG?

Post by Tony Boadle »

I have a Hudson six-string PSG, tuned E9 without the top two and bottom two strings.
It has the two A and B pedals and the raise and lower E levers.
It's a great little guitar and suits my purposes... home recreational use only.
I mostly play my six string and eight string resos, both tuned to my favourite A6TH.
I'm just wondering if I could tune the PSG to A6TH as well? If so, what copedent would work, if any? Just a thought!

On a 10 strings E9 steel, if you push pedals A and B, you get an A6 tuning. If I understand correctly, your tuning with the pedals down would be:

A
E
C#
A
F#
E

Which is an A6 tuning. Its not the most common, but the bottom 5 strings are the same as the top 5 of the popular tuning.

I see no reason you could not tune to A6.. the Fender 400 guitars with 8 strings were tuned to A6 at one point.. Most were switched over to E9 over the years, but I recall some very early Mel Bay pedal steel instruction books, and they were based on the Fender 400 A6 tuning... bob
I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

no gear list for me.. you don't have the time......

How adjustable is the copedent on your guitar? Could you start at A6 and lower to E9? That would give the standard pedal steel moves on the guitar.

May not directly apply, but when I was trying to use palm levers on my lap steel, I experimented with this (lo to hi)

B C# E G# B E - an E6th tuning with no pedals

B C# E A C# E - an A tuning with both pedals, 2nd and 3rd strings, engaged
GFI Expo S-10PE, Sho-Bud 6139, Fender 2x8 Stringmaster, Supro consoles, Dobro. And more.

Thanks for the replies.
I understand that two pedals down gives me A6TH. What I'm trying to work out is what I could do with the A and B pedals plus the E raise and llower with A6TH as the beginning no pedals tuning?

The Pedals on your guitar would map this way to an A6 tuning:
E - B pedal raise.
C#- Knee lever raise and lower
A- A pedal raise
F#- B pedal raise
E
C# - Knee lever raise and lower

With the knee levers you can get a D9 with the raise:
E
D
A
F#
E
D

With the lower level, you get a rootless D9 with a flat 7.
E
C
A
F#
E
D

With the pedals, you can raise the F# and A a whole step to an E6
E
C#
B
G#
E
C#

How adjustable is the copedent on your guitar?
I think this is the question to address first...
If you can switch up the pulls then all sorts of things are possible.
If they're fixed on specific strings, that info would be helpful in designing a copedent.
There have been a number of A6 pedal steel players, although it Is not totally common.
Ernie Hagar used A6 and set up his pedals to get G#s from the As and B's from C#, like a reverse E9.
Herb Reminton had a very cool A6 copedent that is also worth checking out.
