National New Yorker - troubleshoot

Post by Mark Santi »

Hello friends,
Guess I found out why he accepted my lowball offer, pickup seems dead.
Would really appreciate any help, beginning with: how in the world do you get to it ??

After my bad experience with trying to repair, I sold my old New Yorker to a luthier (very low price) who gutted it and installed a modern humbucking pickup, etc. 🥺

My 49 had the large combined pickup casing and bridge. It also arrived dead which I blamed on the shipping rather than the rputable seller. I was able to open the casing by bending back the tabs under the mounting plate, the bobbins Lifted off the polepiece screws and I sent them off to Jason Lollar for rewinding (this was over 15 years ago). Yours may be different, the pics I see of 47s seem to have a separate pickup and bridge.

Could you put up some pictures so we can see what we're dealing with? Some of those have the standard string through Valco pickup, those are totally rebuildable.

A '47 would have an under-string pickup. Which one is a different question.
