high speed internet

I have high speed cable installed and like it. Now our local telephone system is offering their high speed (DSL ??) system, fiber optics, via phone line. They both claim to be better than each other. They both offer free installation and the cable system supplies the modem free.
They both cost the same 39.95 per month.
Which is better and faster. If you had a choice, which would you install?

Several things to consider -

Are they the same speed?
Do you get a static IP with either?
What is the guarenteed speed?
Is it SDSL or ADSL?

I have ADSL 384/256K and am very happy. Static IP Address and something like 128/128 guarenteed.

Around here, if your cable goes out, it may be out for hours or days (during the Northridge quake it was many days before the cable system was stable, but the phone system was operational withing hours) before it is reparied.

My DSL has been dead on stable for more than a year and a half. The availability of DSL is a very big determining factor in my selection of any place to live.

I have ADSL 768/128 service (when it works). I don't know which is better, DSL is still relatively new but the telco seems to provide a little better service (except my LEC which is Verizon). I can't get cable modem access as Time Warner has to upgrade the cable system which is two years down the line.

I get over 80Kb/sec download speeds on fast download sites.

I've gotten over 500Kb/sec a few times with my cable modem, I seem to average 170-200Kb/sec. Upload speed however, is limited to 128Kb/sec. I noticed the other day while trying to email a bitmap file, that they're limiting the size of email to 500K. I don't know when they started that.

I don't have DSL or Cable, So I went with Direct PC, I use a dish the downloads are great, the uploads are what ever you phone line is connecting at. The adverage is 200 to 360 and some times 560's b/sec. Cost 39.95 per month un limetied

Joe,

Are you positive that both cable and DSL will cost you the same amount? The reason I'm saying this is because I have cable and I recently considered DSL because it's supposed to be quite a bit faster than even cable and it was advertised to only cost $20 per month.

But (as in most cases), here's the catch: not only do you have to pay for the DSL service, but you also have to have a dedicated phone line (which where I live costs $30 a month) and you also have to have an internet service provider (which costs around $20 per month).

So, it would have actually cost me $70 per month for the DSL service versus the $40 per month I'm paying now for cable.

I have Warner Cable's "Road Runner" out of Houston. I love it and would hate to go back to the old 56k modem. I have gotten as high as 1800 on downloads and the uploads seem fairly fast to me. I usually average around 900 to 1200 on an average day, when there is not too much traffic. Different sites and locations in the country vary my speed also.
I will keep "beep, beep'n" along. see ya'll in Dallas....

We have Cox Cable in Conroe. Last year, about March, I think, we got a pamphlet in the bill that said "cable modems coming soon". Still not here.

I also noticed something on the "info" channel about new lines being laid.

So, I'm sure we'll have it sometimes (though maybe not this year?).

Found out some info on the telephone high speed cable.
The total cost per month is 39.95, but since I am an MTS long distance subscriber, I recieve a 5% monthly discount & will cost me 37.95 plus taxes, of course.
This includes free installation, tech support, card & the modem is included in the monthly cost and any hookup wiring needed.
It is an ADSL line with speeds up to 906kps upstream & 120kbs downstream, with no limits on downloads or uploads. It is a dynamic IP.
I am presently on a cable system but I have experienced a lot of down time.
So, my cost per month, which includes EVERYTHING, with no hiden costs later, is 37.95, and will be installed the same day I disconnect the cable system.
This system works on my existing phone line and does not interfere with any phone or fax operation. I can be on the internet and use the phone at the same time. The internet system uses a high frequency signal which can't be heard by the human ear.
